A weathervane is a weather device that measures the direction of the wind.  A weathervane is basically an asymmetrically shaped object with a center of gravity fixed to a vertical rod.  As the wind blows, the side with the greatest resistance to air flow turns downwind, and the side with the least resistance points toward the wind.
